Obama to order expansion of overtime pay

Employment Law Newsflash…

President Obama is expected to issue an executive order today (Mar. 12th, 2014) expanding the number of people who will be eligible to qualify for overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act ("FLSA") as follows:

The order is expected to expand eligibility for overtime pay to certain positions, including fast food managers, certain office workers, loan officers, computer technicians, convenience store managers, among other positions that are currently exempt under the professional and administrative exemptions of the FLSA.

It is also expected that the President is going to increase the salary threshold of $455 per work week for employees who are currently exempt from overtime pay under the administrative and professional exemptions under the FLSA. The salary threshold amount is not yet known.

On Thursday, the President will direct the U.S. Department of Labor to revise the current FLSA regulations to substantially increase the number of people who will qualify for overtime pay. The proposed regulations will be subject to public comment before they become final.
